Searching for the final memories.
We are within days... of moving home to Minneapolis. The weather is cool &
pleasant. I am spending every free moment exploring to try to burn the
feelings, sounds & smells of Hong Kong into my memory banks. I know why the
phrase includes 'bank'. That's what it feels like to me.

Qr code on package
This is a cool little 25 usd remote controlled plane from Japan. I thought it was cool because it had a bar code as its wing symbols but the packaging is even cooler.. Why? Well if you look closely on the lower lef of the package there is a qr code. When I snap a pict with my camera phone it takes me to a cool web site about my plane!
Shenzen Metro Token
This RFID token is used in the Shenzen metro. In Shenzen they also have RFID stored value octopus cards like hong kong. But for one time use you buy a token, wave it over the rfid reader and plop it into the exit token reader. Pretty slick and reusable.
Square melons
While we are talking about melons. How about an approximately $150 usd square water melon from Japan. I wonder how many of these they really sell.

lovers locks
In the 'yellow mountains' in China it has become a custom for couples to interlock two padlocks, lock them to the chain rail and throw the keys down the mountain. This symbolizes that they will be joined together forever. If you see more than one padlock locked together this could be a family. Some locks have the couples name and date engraved on them.

Ok, I thought this was a gimmick but it was like
$15 HKD's at the Shatin Ikea. What the heck. I threw it into the basket. You all know that I bought this
nespresso thing for the office. So I am sure that you are saying "why does Elwin need a 'milk frother' when he has a 15 bar steam pump at the office. Well the answer is mess my friend. You see you stick some milk in your cup and then nuke it, stick this little wand in it and you actually can create a pretty decent frothy milk for your expresso. Instant cappuccino. All you need to do is swish the wand in water and it is clean. With the machine, I dirty a frothing cup and the wand of the machine. Poop on that.. this thing really works, but you won't get microfoam (Microfoam is the grail, for
latte art people.. if you care that much about your milk froth,
which some people do and some are
even more serious) Of course all I care about is that I can have a decent easy 'fancy' coffee drink out here in the New Territories of Hong Kong.
Johann, leaving hong kong
Johann, has been staying with us for the summer. He is the son of a friend of ours (and also a friend of ours too). Last year he said to Jenny: "I am going to take Arabic in College", Jenny said "What, are you an idiot? take Mandarin." He did and got A's so we sponsored him to come over here in Asia and use our apartment in Hong Kong as a base of operations. Last weekend was his last day so we took him to the Intercontinental for a 'send off'. Here is his blog post from my Treo 650:
What to say? It's been a hell of a summer...from the killing fields of Cambodia to ritz of the Hong Kong bayside, from the mountains ofYunnan to the bars of Hiroshima. I can't say I've learned anything I can package in a sentence but it definitely has been a pivotal opening chapter in my life. 've made many new friends i'll never see again but as parts of the moments i've lived they''l always be a part of my past and thusly my present. Where I go from here is still pretty obscured but chances are if you're reading this that i'd be honored to share the path. Enough sincerity, though. Let's fuckin' kick it when the time comes. This summer proves that location is a beatable obstacle.

This is a cool sculpture in Heidelberg Germany. Kinda like a monkey man.Funny and gross (very phallic, though I didn't shoot that part heh..)
It has a kinda neet interactive feature where you can put your head in its head and become the monkey creature ..

La la la Lola
This is one of those blog posts that is going to sound 'hoity toity'. But who cares I have a smile on my face. I am sitting in a restaurant called 'Lola' in Brussels. Two weeks ago I was home in Minneapolis on vacation. Jenny has returned to Hong Kong after a meeting at Heidelberg (the town) with Heidelberg (the press manufacturer). Simon, my boss, has left for his further travels. In this case the farther away from the budda (simon) the _less_ chaos there seems to be. So I have some time by myself in wonderful city. So I am recommended this restaurant. And I just finished eating.. As you who know me food is a love of mine. As I sit with my dessert, a Muscat wine and plate of cheeses. I am happy because of the influence of the food and wine but also sad because I miss Jenny and my friends back in Minneapolis. A bitter sweet that actually makes me happy. Kinda like Belgium Chocolate.. anyway La La La La lola.. If you are in brussels, in the season of crawfish please go here an enjoy a wonderful meal.
Sai Kung
This is a little out of order (in that the picture is a few weeks old) this was a celebration at the small town of Sai Kung (about 15 mins from our home) for budda's birthday.
See a man about a horse

Gallant Lion is Simon’s (my boss) new horse. He came from Australia and he raced his first race in the Hong Kong Shatin racecourse on Sunday. We were all there to see him run his short sprint. And yes we bet big.
But he ended in 12th! But really, that didn’t matter because we had an experience that few will ever will have the pleasure to experience. Being with a horse’s owner when they run a race. Standing in the paddock when the horses are paraded. (many here go to the races every Sunday for years and never get to have that experience). So winning or losing.. it was a beautiful day at the races! And one heck of an experience.
RFID, Cards, Video Games

I walked into an arcade here in Hong Kong, I saw something that must have been going on for a while but is new for me. Video games that integrate playing cards and a RFID memory card. So insert your master card into the system, then you take your player cards and can set your players up on the 'field' by laying them on the reader pad.
Then you as you play points get added or subtracted on your master card that you can use in the game or future games.
What is cool about this, is that the cards are read on the filed as they are played and moved around. You then use button's, joysticks to play as well. What is being shown is a Soccar game. But my favorite is a real time strategy game where several players can move armies (represented by their cards) on large virtual battles.

Man Mo Temple
It's the Labor Day national holiday in China & Hong Kong. one of the few
holidays for mainland besides Chinese New Year. Elwin & I are spending the
day exploring Tai Po. An old rural town near the Chinese border. We went
through a wet market with fish, pork & beef on the first floor & vegetables
on the second. Outside are the main streets lined with shops. Ate some
sugar buns filled with red bean paste. Yum. Bumped into this buddhist
temple in the middle of the busi-ness of the street markets. Even though
this a communist holiday in general, the temple is full of burning incense
& kow towing buddists.

Hong Kong Gaming..
When it is 1 am in Minneapolis, and you are playing a network game, it is probably these kids in Hong Kong who are kicking your A** and wiping the floor with you. (it is only $12 Hong Kong Dollars .. that is $1.50 USD.. an hour to play network games on pretty well decked out gaming machines. )

peeing of the roof
This is a picture of the mens urinal in
'Felix' Hong Kong. Some say peeing here feels like you are peeing off the roof of the building. (the fantasy of every ten year old boy) of course every man has a ten year old boy in em.... I think it would be a better effect if the urnals were clear glass..
crabby..

Crab anyone? Some may say that this inhumane... Pick your own food out from the tanks before you eat it.
I'm going to really enjoy this spider crab with shaghai-style sauce. Mmmm. Can't wait.
Little clams. Scallops. Calamari. Crab. Bigred fish with small purple spots on it.
How do you like my pearls?
I met Terry @ the Conrad Hotel today to attend a wholesale pearl show. The deals were amazing, I picked up a multi-colored strand & matching earrings. Wearing them out tonight to eat seafood in Sai Kung.
These are a few of my favorite teas..

Living in Hong Kong means Jen and I are drinking a lot of tea. The two that I always have in my office are Flower tea (ju hua cha) and White Tea (Silver Needle is my favorite). Both of these teas can be brewed multiple times, and if I start a pot in the morning, I can drink it all day long.
Flower tea is simply Chrysanthemum. It is sweet and fresh tasting and seems to mellow me out.
White tea is also sweet, but is very mellow and doesn’t have the grass or sea taste of a normal green tea. White tea also doesn’t have as strong tannins like in darker fermented teas. So you can drink it all day without the cotton mouth. I have found White tea to be the hardest to find (or at least ask for in the tea shops). It is also the most expensive, and I have had to be very picky when buying it because they like to try to slip me a lower grade than I am asking for. Rule of the day, don't buy from a tea shop that won't brew you their tea to try, adn don't buy tea you haven't tried.
Simon seriously digs
Pu-erh tea . He considers it very good for your health and that it aids digestion. Pu-erh is a very dark rich tea, and there are many kinds of Pu-erh. It is aged, and can be aged in several different ways (in caves, in earthen pots, in fruit rinds etc). It is one of those teas that get very strong as they sit in the hot water. (you can have white tea sit in hot water for an hour and it will not become undrinkable. Some Pu-erh can become strong to the point of being undrinkable in 5 minutes).
Pu-erh is perfect with Dim-Sum. It cuts right through the fat, and it’s rich flavor compliments the exotic variety of the dim-sum lunch. It is a great tea; I just can’t drink it all day. There are some Pu-erh teas that have been aged for dozens of years. These are for celebrations and medicinal purposes.
