Elwin &Jen's News
It's the little things...
Only my friend Sharon will truly understand my excitement over this store opening in my local mall.
LUSH is a UK brand bath products store. They mix the recipes on the spot with natural ingredients.
Patty or Heidi, I accidentally left one of the face masks in my fridge at home. In case you ran across it. It's all yours.
My friends should feel free to submit their xmas order.
Sotheby's

I had an opportunity to do one of the coolest things I have ever done yesterday. Out of the blue the owner and my boss Simon invited me to a
Sotheby’s art auction in Hong Kong. I will put some more pictures online. The auction was for fine Chinese paintings.
I love art, and have always been fascinated by Asian ink painting. Every stroke must have purpose, because unlike other mediums, you can’t take a bad stroke away, and you can’t cover a bad stroke up. I can say I appreciated this art.
But Simon not only appreciates art, he chooses paintings that will appreciate. He has a huge collection of many of the works that were offered yesterday, and not one piece went for under $10,000 US. Simon bought three pieces, The highest being $1.5M HKD.
This was something that I never thought I would get to experience, and frankly never knew was so interesting. Why was it interesting? The atmosphere (a buzz), the constant rhythm kept up by the auctioneer, the art, the people, the international culture and the money. Wow… (oh.. notice Simon's choice of a very lucky feng shui number 669)
Darlie/Darkie

I didn't realize there were so many posts online about
Darlie/Darkie toothpaste. Now I am almost embarassed that I thought it was funny and worth putting up here.
Country Inn

Why do I consistently keep publishing about food. Yea, food is one of my favorite things.. And since coming to Hong Kong, my vegetarianism (which I held fast to for over 10 years) has decided to stay in Minneapolis. (A whole new topic to blog about).
But here is the Country Inn outside of Ma On Shan. It isn’t like any country in the USA (grin) and that is probably why I decided to snap a phone pict of their logo. But Jen and I had a great grapefruit, seafood, chili salad here. Sitting outside enjoying almost perfect weather.
Why am I blogging this. I have no idea. Maybe I feel guilty for not having anything to blog about lately.
Octopus

One of the coolest things about Hong Kong (and the new territories) is the ‘
octopus card’ this is credit card sized RFID card that is a proxy for cash. You go to a machine, add value to the card, and then you can use the card for public transportation (Train, Subway, Bus etc), and here is the cincher, at many shops and fast food restaurants. Here is a picture of a parking meter that takes Octopus (and this was in a park far away from Hong Kong island). If you lose the card, it is like losing cash. So don’t put more than what you are ok with losing on it. The convenience is great and from a privacy perspective it is great too because it doesn’t contain any ‘identity’. I wish the USA had a system like this.
Notes become Important..

I have never been a notetaker. Never Ever.. but since I have come to Asia, I have started to use little note books. I use them for keeping track of things like the security code to the Apartment (that changes every month), important numbers, chinese addresses for the cab drivers etc.
I just found this little application today: http://www.pocketmod.com/ and it is pretty cool. Stupid, simple, but cool. BTW I still carry my Treo 650, TabletPC and Macintosh with me everywhere.
We moved to Hong Kong in July '05. Much of this blog is being populated from our camera phones (treo650's) we hope that this helps us keep in touch with our friends who are now so far away!
